After A Wet Winter, Nienhiser Gets 2019 Rolling With Jacksonville Win

PETERSEN MEDIA: With wet weather prolonging the start to his 2019 season, Paul Nienhiser was rewarded for his patience as he opened his season with a victory at Jacksonville Speedway on Sunday afternoon, his 13th career with the Midwest Open Wheel Association (MOWA).

“It was a great weekend for our team, and it felt good to get back out there and race,’ Nienhiser said. “We had a good car both Saturday and Sunday, and I am excited for the year ahead.”

With Friday’s scheduled show at Jacksonville being pushed to a Sunday afternoon matinee, officials opted to use a passing point format opposed to using time trials.

Drawing the third row of his heat race, the Chapin, IL wheelman would make some moves on a relatively narrow surface and fight forward to a third place finish. Rewarded for his efforts, Nienhiser moved into the redraw where he would find himself with the one pill and on the front row of the feature event.

Following a considerable amount of track prep prior to the “A” with the track taking some abuse running under the sunlight, the track would start out narrow but would change considerably during the race.

Out in front, Nienhiser would stay attached to the cushion as it worked higher and higher up the track as the laps clicked off.

Though he would see second running Joe B Miller’s nose a few times in traffic, Nienhiser continued to hit his marks and focus on getting through traffic.

A late restart would see second and third make contact and it would allow Nienhiser to get away and race to his 13th career MOWA win, putting him just nine wins behind MOWA legend Jerrod Hull.

Saturday night Nienhiser’s season came to life at the 34 Raceway in Burlington, IA. Drawing the last group in time trials, a slick surface would see Nienhiser time in 18th quickest and narrowly missing the heat race inversion by two positions.

Finishing fourth in his heat, Nienhiser would transfer into the feature event but would miss out on a redraw berth and lined up 15th in the ‘A’.

On a very slick and abrasive surface, Nienhiser would settle in nicely and carve his way forward as he adapted to the surface that offered drivers a mix of slick in smooth in one set of corners and heavy and rough in the other.

Getting up into seventh, Nienhiser would close in on the Top-Five as the track began to take rubber all the way around.

As the laps drew on, Nienhiser would get out of the rubber to try and make something happen, but it would not go as planned and he would actually lose a position to cap his night with an eighth place run.

“Anytime you can beat a tough field of cars and get a win is a good weekend,” Nienhiser said. “Great start to our season, and a big thanks to everyone who helps us out.”

Nienhiser would like to thank CAM2 Blue Blood Racing Oil, Mason Sound, Innovative Design, Bradshaw Custom Pumping, Wessler Bros. Agency, Bob Hawks Auto Body, Littleton Storm & Timber, Fierce Herbicide, Sunstoppers Window Tinting, Engler Machine and Tool, FK Indy, Rider Racing Engines, Kaeding Performance, Smith Titanium Products, Vortex Wings, Signature Signs and Design, and Team Simpson for their continued support.

2019 BY THE NUMBERS: Races-4, Wins-1, Top 5’s-1, Top 10’s-3
